Tucked behind a main road in Chișinău, standing alone among a forest of of weed-covered paving slabs, is one of Easter Europe’s strangest buildings. The white buttress of the exterior rise from the ground like crooked teeth, while the domed roof resembles a medieval crown. The first clue as to what’s going on inside is the giant relief of two clowns dancing above the entrance. The interior’s snaking staircases and circular ceiling features gives the impression of a honeycomb, while the walls are covered in colourful frescoes depicting some of the world’s greatest performing talent, measured 13m in diameter.
